With Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy, clinicians can pinpoint radiation where it’s needed most. IMRT works through advanced computer programming, dividing each radiation beam into multiple rays, or “beamlets.” It then assigns these beamlets different intensities (beam strengths) according to tumor thickness. Where the tumor is thickest, radiation intensity is highest, and where the tumor is the thinner, radiation intensity is lower.
