Cancer Center Support Services
The Cancer Center has three master's-prepared social workers to help cancer patients and their families cope with the disease and its stressful effects, like family relationships, anxiety, depression, grief and other emotions. The Oncology Social Workers also facilitate our five unique support groups, help with referrals to community programs and can help identify ways to meet financial needs for those who meet eligibility guidelines. Support services include:
- Assistance with applications for Social Security, disability, SSI and Medicaid
- Referrals to community agencies
- Assistance working with Friends of the Cancer Center and other resources to meet the expenses of cancer treatment for eligible patients
- Resources for transportation
- Resources for prescription drugs
- Educational Workshops
- The oncology social workers, dietitians, physicians, physician extenders, and nurses offer periodic educational workshops, based on patients’ needs, many focusing on Survivorship Care. The Cancer Center partners with the American Cancer Society to offer a monthly educational class called “Look Good, Feel Better”, led by ACS-trained cosmetologists that includes complimentary skin care, make up tips and wig styling. A monthly Calendar of Events is available to patients to keep them abreast of upcoming events.
